OVER 200,000 CIRCULATION EVERY DAN Smith Claims Veto Support AUSTIN (AP)-Gov. Preston Smith said Friday he received more than 1,000 letters supporting his threatened veto of the $617 million tax bill. Smith signed a bill Friday repealing $287 million in gasoline and diesel fuel taxes from the overall package. He had signed the tax bill Thursday. After the threatened veto, the legislature cut the proposed two-cents-per gallon gasoline tax increase and the diesel fuel increase.

The governor said he rejected the idea that if the gasoline-diesel tax, increases would have been left in the bill, the state could have built up a reserve to finance the second year of public welfare.
